Why medical facilities should invest in information systems / software packages?
A hospital or laboratory information system offers many advantages from increased efficiency to better compliance. A well integrated system can touch many areas of the lab, from specimen receiving to delivery of results – it can eliminate a huge amount of typing in histology, with instrument interfaces,it can make transcriptionreview of reports much easier, streamline delivery of results, increase tracking points, and provide a way to reviewing statistics and show how well the lab is doing.

Error reduction:
One of the most important things a good medical software package offers is error reduction. In today’s world, hospitals and labs are very busy, people have to work around the clock to deliver timely patient care, and in that high-volume, quick turnaround environment, labs need to implement processes and computer systems to help reduce errors. Handling patient information in primitive ways, without a good computer system offers many risks to especially high-volume institutions. A good example is labs where information is hand-written on slide labels. These are labs which do processing on tissue or fluids using chemicals, and hand-written slide labels can be deformed by those chemicals, and therefore become hard to read. The fact that it takes employee time to handwrite data has financial effects – however, more importantly, hand-writing data may affect patient care as well.
